The devastating earthquake (Mw 7.0) that rocked Haiti in January 2010 caused destruction to the impoverished nation. Up to 300,000 were killed, 1.5 million were displaced and 3.5 million people were directly affected, including the entire population of Port-au-Prince (2.8 million). According to the Ministry of Education, 450,000 children have been displaced by the earthquake and 3,889 students have died, while 1,234 schools have been destroyed, and 2,504 have been damaged.
Past governments cared little about education; the country lacks schools, teaching material and qualified teachers - seven out of ten people in Haiti cannot read or write. 25% of rural areas does not have a school and an estimated 500,000 Haitian children of school age did not attend school, largely because they were needed to work or their parents simply could not afford the school fees - 81% of Haiti's schools are private (usually religious and urban-based).
Does the quake will provide an opportunity to building better schools and provide an educational system to serve the needs of all Haitians?
